Hazarduari Palace , earlier known as the Bara Kothi, is located in the campus of Kila Nizamat in Murshidabad, in West Bengal.

How to reach:

Many trains are available from Kolkata station to Murshidabad station. Hazarduari palace is located 3 kilometers away from the station.

History:

The foundation stone of the palace was laid on 9 August 1829, and that very day the construction work was started. William Cavendish was the then Governor-General of India. Colonel Duncan MacLeod of the Bengal Corps of Engineers supervised the construction. The construction was completed in December 1837. The name of the palace that is Hazarduari means "a palace with a thousand doors". Hazar means "thousand" and Duari means "the one with doors"; thus, the total sums up to "the one with a thousand doors". The palace has 1000 doors, of which100 are false, and a total of 114 rooms.

Interesting Facts:

• The false doors were built so that if any predator tried to do something wrong and escape, he would be confused between the false and real doors, and by that time he would be caught by the Nawab's guards.

• A grand flight of stairs of 37 steps of stone, the lowermost one of which is 108 feet (33 m) long, leads up to the palace's upper portico. This grand staircase is perhaps the biggest one in India.

• There is a total of 20 galleries in the museum which showcases different objects of historical importance such as armory, paintings and royal exhibits

The National Library is located on Belvedere Road in Alipore, Calcutta. It is easily accessible and one can take a cab or a bus and it takes 8 minutes to reach the Library from Kolkata

History:

The history of the National library began with the formation of Calcutta public library in 1836. Both Indian as well as foreign books were purchased for the library. Calcutta public library was the first public library at this part of the world. Such a well-organized and efficiently run library was rare even in Europe during the first half of the 19th century.

 The Imperial Library was formed in 1891 by combining a number of Secretariat libraries in Calcutta. After independence the Government of India changed the name of the Imperial Library to the National Library, and the collection was transferred from The Esplanade to the present Belvedere Estate. On 1 February 1953 the National Library was opened to the public by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

• It is the largest in India with a collection in excess of 2.2 million books.

• Before independence, it was the official residence of Governor-General of India.

• The National Library has over 45 kilometers of shelf space

• The Library has reading rooms can accommodate over 550 people

History: 

The Howrah bridge is one of the must-see tourist spots in Kolkata. It is one of a kind and the sixth largest bridge in the world.

 The bridge was commissioned in 1943 and was initially called as the New Howrah Bridge. In 1963, it was given the name of Rabindra Setu in the honor of reknowned Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. It serves as an ideal gateway to Kolkata and connects it to the famous Howrah station. In 1946, in a census carried out, it said that the bridge saw a daily traffic of 27400 vehicles and 12100 pedestrians.

History :

This huge three-storeyed building was built in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist and a devotee of kali. In the year 1847, Rani Rashmoni prepared to go to the sacred Hindu city of Kashi, to express her devotions to the divine mother. According to traditional accounts, the night before the pilgrimage began, the divine mother appeared in her dreams in the form of goddess Kali. Profoundly affected by the dream, Rani immediately purchased a huge plot of land in Dakshineswar. Thus, the large temple complex was built between 1847 to 1855.
